The unique feature of Circle of Life lies in its use of the "circle" as a medium for space transformation. From the entrance, the living room is designed as a double circle, creating a sense of continuity and flow. The layers of arc space built into the porch walls, along with a circular gold boundary at the core, define and penetrate the ceiling, seamlessly integrating functional equipment. The semi-perspective basket geometry cleverly divides the field, while ceramic tiles and wooden floors serve as regional boundaries, creating a visually stunning and well-planned space.
Circle of Life is brought to life through a combination of different materials and design elements. The use of circular shapes, mirror reflections, step cabinets, gold leaf-shaped lampshades, and embedded iron staircases represent natural images such as mountains, sun, and rivers. These elements create an ecologically connotative scenery within the home, evoking a sense of tranquility and connection to nature.
Technically, Circle of Life showcases a combination of modern industrial elements and different materials to achieve a concise visual effect. The arrangement of iron parts, along with the technique of pre-embedded iron parts, ensures both functionality and beauty. The clear and practical appearance of the empty shelves and handrails adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of the space.
The design of Circle of Life also takes into consideration the interaction and safety of its inhabitants. With the use of circular elements in furniture and decorations, the space is made child-friendly. The semi-perspective techniques employed in the arc partitions create a transparent visual effect, promoting a sense of safety and harmony. The vibrant color configurations add a lively and pleasant atmosphere to the rooms, making them perfect for play and amusement.
The Circle of Life project began in July 2019 and was completed in February 2020 in New Taipei City, Taiwan. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted to ensure the use of circular materials not only enhanced the living experience but also created a harmonious and visually appealing space. The challenges faced during the project, such as embedding iron parts for the staircase without external supports, were overcome through careful material selection and meticulous planning.
Circle of Life is a testament to Jeff Hsu's innovative approach to design. By incorporating circular elements, natural imagery, and modern simplicity, Hsu has created a residence that not only reflects the beauty of its surroundings but also provides a comfortable and harmonious living space. This exceptional design has been recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2021, further cementing its status as an outstanding and creatively ingenious work of art.
